From next month, the Australian Cinemateque at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) presents Cult Japan, a program of films that celebrate the ‘strange and outrageous in post-war Japanese cinema’. The program, which is presented in five strands, includes films across myriad genres and styles, from action to horror to science-fiction to animation. While some of the films, such as Ghost in the Shell and Battle Royale have become popular around the world and have influenced subsequent films made outside of japan such as The Matrix and The Hunger Games, several others such as Ring and Dark Water have been remade in Hollywood with varying degrees of success.  A strand that will no doubt prove very popular is a retrospective of the work of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, whose animated fables have been hailed around the world for more than 30 years.

Battle Royale

The opportunity to see these films on the big screen is an exciting proposition and tickets are just $9.00 per film or $7.00 for concessions, with multi-film passes also available.

The program kicks off on July 3 and runs until August 30 at the Australian Cinemateque, GoMA (Southbank, Brisbane).
