Well, Big Sound has come and gone for another year, Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley having been invaded by musicians, fans and industry types in their multitudes. The Big Sound Live component of the conference featured more than 100 bands and artists performing at numerous venues over two nights, with several other not-quite-official events also staged throughout the week at various locations across the city.

Whilst Big Sound has been covered extensively elsewhere – and notwithstanding the fact I wasn’t granted access to cover the festival in any depth – I thought it would be good to acknowledge those moments that are perhaps overlooked amidst the chaos and excitement that invariably fills the air whenever Big Sound comes to town.

On Wednesday night (September 10), Hannah Rosa took out the Brisbane heat of the Telstra Road to Discovery competition at Black Bear Lodge. Those familiar with this site will know that Hannah has featured regularly on these pages and it was great to see her talents recognised with this win. The Telstra Road to Discovery program provides a genuine opportunity for home-grown talent to make inroads into the Australian music scene.

As a heat winner, Hannah will head to Melbourne for the semi-final and an opportunity to spend time with Australian music industry leaders. Ten performers will progress through to the final, from which two lucky winners will emerge with a $15 000 music development fund and a trip to the USA to perform showcases and attend workshops with songwriters and producers.
