The 2014 World Press Photo Exhibition will feature at Brisbane Powerhouse from the end of this month, showcasing the world’s best press photographs across several categories. This competition demonstrates the power of photography in providing insight into the world around us. This year, more than 5500 photographers from 132 countries submitted over 95 000 images for consideration in the 57th annual staging of this competition.
This free exhibition is a fantastic opportunity for schools to bring class groups to Brisbane Powerhouse to see some of the most powerful images of world events. The World Press Photo website includes a terrific Teacher’s Guide and Student Education Pack that encourages students to contemplate the broader context of the images and important issues such as the ethics and dangers associated with capturing these images and the freedom of the press versus the right to privacy. Students are also afforded the opportunity to select the image they believe is the best and justify their choice.
The exhibition opens at Brisbane Powerhouse on Saturday, May 31 and continues until Sunday, June 22.
